Course Description

This course will cover a variety of topics pertinent to understanding the history, continuation, and influence of American folk music on the birth and development of popular recorded music, and as a musical and cultural resource in folk revivals throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Through a historical approach with an emphasis on important styles, artists, and social and cultural issues, this class will explore the multiple sounds and meanings of folk music as they are introduced, borrowed, and revisited throughout the history of recorded music.
