About the Program

The Drug Discovery Online program started in 2018 with the goals of increasing the digital literacy of current students, showcasing the rich research expertise within the School of Medicine Basic Sciences and reaching additional students through creating online resources. Since our inception, we have targeted our efforts to the development of 2-week mini-courses that cover a variety of topics key to drug discovery and development. Our goal is to develop a service core to assist in online resource creation.

Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt School of Medicine are world leaders in the areas of pharmacology, drug discovery, and drug development. Drug Discovery Online is targeting the design and construction of online programs for students interested in the pharmaceutical industry. We apply the latest approaches and state-of-the-art practices in online learning. Quality Matters (QM) is an international, U.S.-based non-profit organization specializing in standards, processes, and professional development for quality assurance in online and blended learning. QM tools and resources are regularly revised to reflect current research and best practices. The Drug Discovery Online program follows the QM rubric to maintain the highest quality of online materials.

DDx Mini-Courses

DDx, which stands for Discovery Diagnosis, are meant to serve as quick guides for exploring drug discovery and pharmacology topics. These 2-week mini-courses are brought to you by a highly-skilled, interdisciplinary team of experts from across Vanderbilt University. The classes integrate multimedia elements and creative visual approaches to teach the latest concepts in organs-on-chips, medicinal chemistry, enzyme kinetics, DMPK, and beyond. Applying the science of learning and best practices in online education, the goal of these mini-courses is to offer quick, to the point, lessons on these topics. DDx courses can be used for catching up, getting ahead, or learning a new perspective on the basic principles of drug discovery and development.

Message from DDO Director – Kendra H. Oliver, Ph.D.

I am delighted to present to you Drug Discovery Online, a service core whose mission is to assist faculty with instructional design, video and audio editing services, website design, and course assessment strategies. As an experienced scientist passionate about science communication, multi-disciplinary projects, and online learning and engagement approaches, I aim to create new online resources and tools to communicate scientific discovery and engage the public. Although classically trained as a research scientist in pharmacology, I consider myself a science communication designer with skills ranging from project management, pedagogical approaches to online learning, video production, instructional design, and web design. Using online learning and visualization methods, I am exploring visual science communication to support online education and science marketing approaches.
